The Reason You Don't Have a Bidet Has Nothing to Do With the Bidet

By the RinseMate team · Updated 22 October 2026

"Read this before you book a plumber — or give up again."

Left: the braided water supply line and shut-off valve a plumbed or clamp-on bidet has to tap into. Right: RinseMate's standalone tank and wand, which never touches the plumbing.

TLDR: A bidet that never touches your water supply — here's how that works 👇

You looked it up once. Maybe you got as far as a quote, or a tab about shut-off valves and T-connectors, or the part where you'd have to ask someone else for permission first. Then you closed the tab — and nothing about wanting one changed.

That tab is the whole story. Almost nobody gives up on the bidet. They give up on the pipes, the drilling, the plumber, the toilet that turns out to be the wrong shape. The want stays; the plumbing kills it.

Here's the question: if a bidet needs a water supply, and you can't touch the water supply — what's left? Five sections, starting with where the water actually comes from.
Left: a wrench on a toilet's water supply line, the plumbing a clamp-on bidet has to tap into. Right: RinseMate's standalone tank and wand beside a toilet, connected to nothing.

The starting point

1. So where does the water come from?

From a tank you fill at the sink. That's the whole trick, and it changes what's required of the room: no pipes, no drilling, no plumber, no tools, no permission. The device carries its own water and its own electric pump, so it never has to be joined to anything.

1

Fill

2.5-litre (0.66 US gallon) tank at the sink, with clean water at a comfortable temperature. Follow the product instructions.

2

Place

Stand it on the floor beside the toilet. That's the install.

3

Press

One button starts the spray. Choose between two pressure modes.

Is one tank enough?

The separate tank keeps the water beside the toilet rather than inside the handheld sprayer. How many uses you get depends on your pressure setting and how long you rinse.

The rechargeable unit lasts up to 60 days between charges, depending on use.

So far so simple. The harder question is why nothing else in this category works that way — because there's one thing every other option has in common.

The design flaw

2. Every other option has the same problem

Sort this category by one question — does it touch your water supply? — and everything lines up on the same side except one:

  • Fixed bidets and washlet seats assume you can alter the room permanently.
  • Clamp-on attachments open your toilet's water line, and stay with that toilet.
  • Squeeze bottles ask nothing of the room, but they only hold one squeeze of pressure.
  • Wipes work, and then you're buying wipes forever.

None of those are silly choices. If you own a squeeze bottle or a pack of wipes, you were solving the right problem with what was actually available. They just each run into the same wall from a different direction.

The clamp-on deserves the most detail, because it's the option most people find first and it looks like the answer. clamp-on attachments — Tushy, Luxe, Brondell don't need a plumber. They need you to be the plumber: shut off the water to the toilet, drain the tank, disconnect the supply line, and fit a T-valve between the wall and the fill valve.

That is the plumbing. It's the exact thing standing between most people and a bidet.

And there's a fit problem that only shows up once the box is open: a clamp-on needs a standard fill valve and clearance under the seat. Plenty of bathrooms don't have it — older buildings, one-piece toilets, tight cisterns, non-standard valves. That's true whether you rent, own, share a house, live with family, or are the one person in a student flat who cares about this.

That matters whether you rent a flat, share a house, live with family or own your home and simply want to keep your bathroom as it is. The same no-plumbing setup works in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

This isn't a travel version of a real bidet. It's a real bidet that happens not to need plumbing.

Which raises the obvious suspicion: if it isn't connected to anything, where does the pressure come from? That's the part almost nobody explains.

The mechanism

3. The part nobody explains about portable bidets

The important difference is simple: RinseMate has its own electric pump and a separate water tank. You press a button rather than repeatedly squeezing a bottle.

The tank stays on the floor beside the toilet, and the flexible hose reaches the handheld sprayer. Nothing needs to connect to the toilet or its water supply.

Choose from two pressure modes. Fill the tank with clean water at a comfortable temperature, following the product instructions. You do not need a hot-water connection.

RinseMate customer holding the tank and wand in a bathroom, with a speech bubble: I can't believe I didn't buy this earlier.

It comes with you

4. What happens when you move

It goes in a box. It works in the next apartment, and the one after that. Nothing to remove, nothing to patch, nothing to explain on the way out.

That's also true of the trips a fixture can't follow you on: hotels, a week at your parents', a rented cottage, a spare bathroom, a place you only stay in half the year. Because RinseMate needs nothing from the room — no valve, no clearance, no drilling — the room stops mattering.

A clamp-on comes off too, in fairness. But then you're draining a tank and re-fitting the T-valve at the other end, on a toilet that may not accept it. And it was never coming to a hotel.

The questions people ask first

Do I need to ask my landlord?+

No. Nothing attaches to the toilet, the seat or the water line, so nothing about the apartment is altered.

Will it work with my toilet?+

Yes. It stands on the floor and connects to nothing, so fill valves, one-piece toilets, tight cisterns and older bathrooms are all fine.

How is this different from a clamp-on attachment?+

A clamp-on splices into your toilet's water line — you shut off the supply, drain the tank and fit a T-valve — and it stays with that toilet. RinseMate never touches your water supply and leaves with you.

Where does the water come from?+

From its own 2.5-litre (0.66 US gallon) tank, filled at the tap. An electric pump sends the water to the handheld sprayer.

Can I use warm water?+

Fill the tank with clean water at a comfortable temperature, following the product instructions. Never use hot water.

Is one tank enough?+

That depends on the pressure mode and how long you rinse. Refill the tank from the tap as needed.

Can I take it travelling?+

Yes. It needs nothing from the room, so it works in hotels, at family homes and anywhere you're staying more than a night.

What if I don't like it?+

You can return eligible unopened items within 14 days. Opened or used intimate hygiene products cannot be returned for a change of mind. Read our returns policy. Contact support for faulty items.
