P2-adv/listicle - 1.1 - I Thought Bidets Were Weird
I Thought Bidets Were Weird — Then I Tried This
I’d used toilet paper for more than 40 years and never understood why anyone needed a bidet. Then one simple question made me rethink the habit completely.

I’m going to admit something that will probably make a few people laugh.
I used to think bidets were weird.
Not bad, necessarily. Just... unnecessary.
I’d used toilet paper my entire life. My parents used toilet paper. My husband used toilet paper. Everyone I knew used toilet paper.
So whenever I saw people online talking about how they could “never go back” after trying a bidet, I assumed they were exaggerating.
And honestly, the whole idea of installing some strange attachment onto my toilet sounded like far more trouble than it was worth.
Then someone asked me one question that I couldn’t really get out of my head.
“If Something Got on Your Hand, Would You Just Wipe It With Dry Paper?”
At first, I laughed.
But then I actually thought about it.
If I got something messy on my hand, I wouldn’t grab a few sheets of dry toilet paper, wipe it a couple of times and think:

I’d wash my hands.
With water.
We use water to clean our hands, our bodies, our dishes, our clothes — almost everything.
Yet somehow I had never questioned why my bathroom routine was different.
It wasn’t that toilet paper suddenly seemed terrible.
I just realized I had never actually thought about it before.

Then I Started Noticing How Much I Was Actually Wiping
Once the thought was in my head, I started noticing my own routine.
Some bathroom visits were simple.
Others were:

And I’d never considered that strange.
I just assumed some bathroom visits required more wiping than others.
That was normal.
But suddenly I started wondering:
That was the first time the whole bidet thing started making a little more sense to me.
But I still had one major objection.
There Was Still No Chance I Was Installing a Bidet
This was where my curiosity normally stopped.
When I heard “bidet,” I pictured hoses, valves, tools, taking the toilet seat apart and wondering whether I had tightened everything correctly.

Maybe some people enjoy DIY projects.
I do not want my bathroom hygiene routine to become one.
I wasn’t going to disconnect water lines, modify my toilet or call a plumber just to test something I wasn’t even convinced I needed.
That’s when I came across RinseMate.
This Wasn’t What I Imagined a Bidet Would Be
RinseMate gives you a handheld water rinse without permanently installing a traditional bidet onto your toilet.
That was the part that finally made me curious.
I didn’t have to become a “bidet person.”
I didn’t have to redesign my bathroom.
I could simply try rinsing with water and decide for myself whether all those people online were actually onto something.
The First Time I Used It, I Finally Understood
I’m not going to pretend the first few seconds didn’t feel unfamiliar.
I had been doing the same thing in the bathroom for more than four decades.
Changing that routine naturally felt a little strange.

Then I actually used it.
And suddenly I understood what everyone had been talking about.
It wasn’t some dramatic, life-changing moment.
It was much simpler than that.
Rinse with water.
Dry afterward.
Done.

No repeated wiping until I felt like I was probably finished.
The biggest difference for me was the feeling afterward.
I felt properly fresh and finished.
It Stopped Feeling Weird Almost Immediately
This was probably the part that surprised me most.
After using water a few times, it didn’t feel like I had added some elaborate new bathroom ritual.
It was just:
And that was when I started understanding why people who use bidets can sound almost annoyingly enthusiastic about them.
They aren’t necessarily obsessed with bathroom gadgets.
They’ve simply gotten used to rinsing with water.
Then My Husband Started Using It
This was the part I had secretly been waiting for.
When RinseMate first appeared in the bathroom, my husband’s reaction was pretty much what mine would have been a month earlier.

I told him not to judge it until he had actually tried it.
Eventually curiosity won.
And that was when the product stopped feeling like my strange internet purchase.
It simply became something that belonged in our bathroom.
The Weirdest Part? Toilet Paper Alone Started Feeling Incomplete
This was the part I definitely never expected.
A few weeks earlier, I thought using a bidet was the unusual option.
Then I used a bathroom where I only had regular toilet paper available.
And suddenly I noticed the difference.
Toilet paper hadn’t changed.
My reference point had.
Once rinsing with water had become normal, going back to dry paper alone felt like a downgrade.
I Finally Understood Why Wet Wipes Had Always Felt Better
I’d occasionally used wet wipes when I wanted to feel extra fresh.
Looking back, that should probably have been the clue.
Moisture already felt different from dry paper.
But wet wipes also meant another disposable product to buy, store, use and throw away.
Rinsing with water simply took that logic one step further.

So, Is RinseMate Only for “Bidet People”?
I actually think people like me are exactly why a product like this makes sense.
People who have never wanted a traditional bidet.
People who think toilet paper is perfectly normal.
People who don’t want to modify their bathroom.
People who roll their eyes at every new product they see advertised online.
Because that is exactly where I started.

I didn’t need someone to convince me to join some “bidet lifestyle.”
I just needed enough curiosity to try rinsing with water for myself.
Once I did, the logic became difficult to ignore.
From “That’s Weird” to “Why Didn’t I Try This Earlier?”
If you had told me a few months ago that rinsing with water would become a normal part of our bathroom routine, I probably would have laughed.
I genuinely thought bidets were unnecessary.
Now I don’t really think about RinseMate as a bidet.
It’s simply a way to rinse with water before drying.
And once that became normal, the old routine started feeling strangely incomplete.
You don’t need to decide that you’re suddenly a “bidet person.”
You can simply try rinsing with water and decide for yourself.
Still Think Bidets Are Weird?
You don’t need to replace your toilet or turn your bathroom into a plumbing project. Try the simple part that changes the entire idea: rinse with water, dry, and decide for yourself.
